Choosing peel and stick wallpaper

Where it works

Peel and stick wallpaper works best on a smooth wall painted in eggshell or satin. That's it, really. Flat paint is chalky and the adhesive won't hold well, and fresh paint needs about a month to cure first. Renters love it, and so do we for the wall behind a bed or a home office you'll probably want to change in a few years. You put it up one 19-inch panel at a time, so a feature wall is an afternoon, not a weekend. Read our guide to applying peel and stick wallpaper before you start. Picking between the designs

The right design depends mostly on how busy you want the wall to feel. Our two toiles, Dune Scene and Harbour Sketch, are teal line on cream. From the sofa they read as calm texture. Walk up close and there are palms, jetties, tiny people. Want something graphic? Half Moons puts big charcoal half-circles on pale gray, and Olive Ogee runs chartreuse waves down a stone ground. For a dark room we'd go straight to Moth Meadow, moths and night flowers on forest green. And if the room already has plenty of wood and linen, Woven Blocks looks a lot like pieced cloth.
