Choosing coastal wallpaper

Where it works

Coastal designs go where you want the room to feel lighter and cooler than it is: a bathroom, a bedroom, a sunroom, the hallway to a back door. The pool murals, Bright Water, Slow Swim and The Shallows, scatter their figures evenly so a door or a window can interrupt them without spoiling the scene; they suit a bathroom or a family room. Dune Scene and Harbour Sketch, teal toiles on cream, are fine enough for a bedroom, or for a dining room. Beach Finds, shells and urchins on warm cream, is the powder room design.

Picking between the designs

Decide between water, shore and leaf. Water: the pool and beach murals, painted in cerulean and turquoise washes with small figures, plus Foam Crest and Blue Shore for a repeating wave. Shore: Beach Finds, the Watercolor Collector's Shell, Scallop Sea, Reef Cutout and Coral Cluster, where the subject is what washes up. Leaf: Sun Fronds in loose impasto, Pale Fronds in low-contrast cream and beige, White Veins in fine white line on azure. The murals print as one continuous scene and want a full wall; the toiles and shell designs repeat, so they will cover a room. If the room is small, Pale Fronds and Dune Scene add the coast without the colour.
