Choosing floral wallpaper

Where it works

The dark florals here are dining room and bedroom murals: Midnight Hibiscus, oversized blooms in pink and teal on midnight, and Night Lily, lilies rising from an obsidian ground, both put their weight low and suit a wall with a bed or a sideboard against it. Bloom Below sits its blooms high, so it wants clear space above the furniture. The light florals are for kitchens, nurseries and hallways: Pinwheels, small daisies on white, Field Scatter, Amber Garland. Blossom River, a pastel garden reading toward a distant folly, works on a wall you approach from one end.

Picking between the designs

Mural or repeat first. Murals: Midnight Hibiscus, Night Lily, Bloom Below, Giant Petals, Teal Petals, Blossom River, one scene for one wall. Repeats: Moth Meadow on forest green, Toadstool Wood with hellebores on green-black, Rust Roses, Full Marigold, Dutch Table, Pinwheels, Amber Garland, which cover a room. Then ground: midnight and green-black for drama, cream and white for light. Then scale: the murals and Full Marigold draw their blooms large; Pinwheels keeps its daisies deliberately small. Shell Fans is the odd one, charcoal palmettes in rows, a floral only by ancestry.
